It is quite disappointing to see that certain local authorities are adamant about banning the use of e-cigarettes in public areas without even looking into whether or not second hand vapour is as dangerous as it is made out to be. These unjustified and misinformed bans and prohibitions make life difficult for a lot of vapers out there. Why should vapers have to stay inside their homes to inhale e-liquid vapour when there is very little evidence to suggest that doing that outside would be harmful to others?

At a time where more and more evidence is being brought up to establish the fact that e-liquid inhalation is not even remotely as harmful as tobacco smoking, it makes very little sense for certain governing bodies to take such a strong stand against e-cigarettes. Despite what the powers that be have to say, the intelligent consumers are always on the lookout for legitimate information before making a verdict on any product, especially one that is as new as e-cigarettes.

Research Work on Second Hand Vapour

When it comes to e-cigarettes and e-liquids, the key to success for the manufacturer lies in thorough research work that invalidates the irrational concerns about the safety of using these products. A number of different studies conducted recently have allowed us to obtain a better understanding of the potential long term and short term effects of second hand vapour. These tests were not carried out on human beings, since that would breach the codes of experimental ethics. This is why it has been so difficult to make a definite remark on the impact that second hand vapour has had on individuals. Under such circumstances, it becomes to pivotal to direct resources towards research work that focuses on analyzing the vapour itself in a genuine attempt to discover any potential effects that it may contain.

No Real Reason to be Worried

That being said, the experts have reached a general consensus on the subject of the safety of second hand vapour. They believe that not only is second hand vapour safer, but some of them have explicitly stated, for all intents and purposes, that the health risks associated with second hand vapour are simply not there. In other words, there are not a lot of reasons for anyone to be concerned about having their health affected by second hand vapour. The fear is understandable, but it is quite frankly unjustified.

The Aerosol Emitted is probably Not Harmful

What the studies have done is that they have created various benchmarks to evaluate the health risks attached with second hand vapour. Most of the people who have conducted these tests firmly believe that aerosol emitted in the action of vaping does not have the potential to harm someone’s health considerably. There are far more harmful things than public vaping out there that have not caught the attention of the authorities.

What do the Studies Reveal?

A 2014 study that was published in BMC Central made it very clear that people who are exposed to second hand vapour are not in danger of having their health affected by harmful contaminants. The exposure to second hand vapour would amount to less than 1% of the threshold limit value that is assigned to the air quality in work places. This means that a person can easily inhale e-liquid vapour in his or her office without having to feel guilty about causing any harm to the surrounding individuals, including their boss. The knowledge of chemistry that is currently available to us does not indicate that aerosols associated with electronic cigarettes are dangerous enough to warrant health concerns.

In another study that was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, it was revealed that the phenolic and carbonyl compounds that are usually found in e-liquid vapour have very minimal ability to harm individuals who are exposed to them in second hand form. In other words, the level of phenolic and carbonyl compounds in second hand vapour could not quite possibly be high enough to cause illness in bystanders or compel them to suffer from minor health complications. There is no reason for a person to stay far away from a vaper or cover their faces when they are standing beside one.

Comparing Second Hand Vapour to Cigarette Smoke and Ambient Air

Second hand vapour is often said to be similar to the smoke that comes out of a cigarette. The only real similarity between the two lies in their appearance. Everything else about them is completely different. Whereas there is no concrete evidence to suggest that second hand vapour puts bystanders at risk, there is a ton of research work to support the theory that cigarette smoke is filled with carcinogens and toxins that could severely impair a person’s health. It is completely unfair to compare second hand vapour to cigarette smoke. In fact, a better comparison would be one that involves ambient air. When e-liquids are vaporized, they contain HPHCs levels that are not too different from those in ambient air.
